Washington Framework for Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling

The fourth phase in developing a comprehensive counseling program is to evaluate the effectiveness of school counseling programs and interventions according to the Ethical Standards for School Counselors (2010), a school counselor, “assesses the effectiveness of his/her program in having an impact on students’ academic, career, and personal/social development through accountability measures especially examining efforts to close achievement, opportunity and attainment gaps” (p. 2). While a great deal of attention has been paid to accountability, evaluating school counseling programs and activities has other benefits. “Ultimately, evaluation helps us to do our best work with the greatest impact, most effectively” (Dimmitt, 2009).
